We have spent the past few days in deep reflection following the passing of Professor Jason Arday. We did not want to add our voice simply because so many others were speaking. Sometimes, in moments of great sadness and complexity, perhaps the most respectful thing we can do is sit with our thoughts before adding more words to the world. But as a community of writers, storytellers and people who understand the power of words, we feel there is something important that must not be lost.Behind every story is a human being. Before the headlines, the commentary, the allegations, the opinions and the public debate, there was Jason.A son.A husband.A father.A friend.A colleague.A human being. And today, there is a family grieving someone they loved. There will undoubtedly continue to be conversations about the events surrounding his life and passing. There may be questions that need asking and lessons that need learning. Accountability and scrutiny have their place. But so does humanity. As writers, we know that words are powerful. They can illuminate truth, challenge injustice and hold people to account. But words can also wound. When enough voices gather around one human being, we must never become so consumed by the story that we forget the person standing at its centre.Perhaps this moment should ask something of all of us:How do we hold people accountable without abandoning compassion? How do we seek truth without losing our humanity? And when everyone is speaking, do we ever stop to consider the weight of our words?Professor Jason Arday lived a remarkable life and broke barriers many once thought impossible. Today, we choose to pause and acknowledge that life — and to extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all those mourning him.We also stand in support of the vigil being held in his memory. For those wishing to attend, details can be found in the accompanying image.May this be more than a moment of mourning.May it also be a moment of reflection.Words matter. People matter more...........#literarycommunity#blackwriters#writercommunity#BlackLondon#literary… See MoreSee Less
